Lauded by press and public alike, Steve Lawson's otherworldly cinematic soundscapes, improvised live with nothing but a bass guitar, a MIDI controller and a bewildering array of pedals have helped make him the most celebrated solo bassist in the UK. Through touring the world as solo artist, sideman and clinician/educator, and across a staggering 45 solo and collaborative releases in the last 17 years, Lawson has built an uncommonly large following for his particular brand of melodic ambient electronica, with audiences drawn in by his friendly, warm stage presence, but sticking around for the ECM-meets-Windham Hill vibe of his captivating, mostly-improvised solo and duo performances. Recent collaborators, both live and in the studio include Divinity Roxx, Beardyman, Reeves Gabrels, Jason Cooper (The Cure), Andy Gangadeen, Jon Thorne (Lamb), Rob Turner (GoGo Penguin), Jem Godfrey (Frost*), Tanya Donelly, Briana Corrigan, Mark Kelly (Marillion), Roy Dodds (Fairground Attraction) and more…. Perhaps the most rewarding of Lawson's collaborations is that with his American singer and multi-instrumentalist wife, Lobelia, the pair tour venues and house concerts across the UK, Europe and the US.
No less a luminary than Victor Wooten once commented 'Steve Lawson is a brilliant musician. I've known about him and listened to him for many years. He may not be one of the most famous bassists but he is definitely one of the most talented' - who are we to argue?
